Acedia
I learned a new word today: Acedia. It was a monastic word describing lassitude and despair that overcomes spiritual striving. A falling away into boredom, depression, listlessness; one's feelings seemed to have died; a sense of nothingness; a numbness.
Man do I know this feeling well! And I am in the process of emerging. As I read it, the word has no English equivalent. But the description fits the way I have felt for months! And apparently the best cure is hard work. By giving in to the feeling and doing nothing, it actually causes the feeling to perpetuate. So I have to get off my lazy butt and do more. (Actually I think this is where the prozac comes in...helps to get the "get off your butt" ball rolling so to speak.)
I LOVE learning new words.
